“The model said so” won’t satisfy a candidate, a hiring manager or a regulator. Here’s what explainable screening looks like.
Just now
If an AI tool helps decide who gets an interview, someone will eventually ask why a particular person didn’t. That might be the candidate, a hiring manager or a regulator. “The model said so” won’t be an acceptable answer.
GoVerse’s post sets out why explainability has become non-negotiable in AI hiring. The EU AI Act lists AI used in recruitment and selection as high-risk. New York City’s Local Law 144 requires bias audits and notices for automated employment decision tools. And Australia’s AI Ethics Principles set expectations for transparency and contestability.

The post also clears up three terms that often get blurred: explanation, interpretability and transparency. It includes a worked example of what a genuine “right to explanation” looks like for a screened-out candidate, and argues that a complete audit trail is an asset to the organisation, not just a compliance cost.
It also sets out a practical path for making the transition.
