_A feature-by-feature review of the Content Snare alternative, including what is new: password sign-in, a public API with documentation, and a Zapier app that has passed review and is being prepared for Beta listing. Written by the HeyReq team, with the same rule as our last comparison: where a competitor is stronger, we say so._
Short version
HeyReq is a client information collection tool for small accounting and bookkeeping teams: you send a client a link, the client works through a checklist of documents, answers, and signatures, and the tool chases, reminds, and organizes until the request is complete. The core experience is the same as Content Snare, the established product in this space. The differences are price shape, a few included features, and how deep the integrations go.
Bottom line up front: if you need Xero Practice Manager, FYI, or a native Zapier app today, Content Snare still wins. If you are a small team that wants a permanent free plan, e-signatures included in the same checklist, and a price that does not grow when you add staff, HeyReq is the leaner choice. Read on for the feature-by-feature evidence.
What HeyReq actually is
HeyReq is built around one idea: a client request is a state machine, not a pile of emails. A request moves through draft, published, in progress, in review, and completed (or closed, or reopened). Every feature in the product serves one metric: median days from sending a request to getting it completed. Reminders exist to shrink that number. Review exists to avoid a second round of chasing. The client portal exists so returning clients can find everything in one place.
It is designed for small service teams, solo firms included, working in English or Chinese. It is not a practice management suite. It does not do bookkeeping, tax preparation, or invoicing. It does one job: getting information out of clients.
The workflow, end to end
Create. Build a request from a template or from scratch, or import questions from a CSV file. A request can be a month-end checklist, a year-end package, or an onboarding form. You can set a due date, an owner on your team, and a client, or leave the client unassigned and assign one later, right up to publishing.
Publish. The publish screen confirms who the request goes to, when it is due, and what reminders will do. The client gets a link. New requests open without a login by default: the client clicks and starts. No account creation, no password reset, no portal onboarding for a first-time client.
Client fills. The client sees a structured checklist with a progress bar: upload a document, answer a question, sign where a signature is needed. Progress auto-saves, so a client can stop halfway and come back later without losing anything. Files, form answers, and e-signatures live in the same checklist, so a signature is just another item to complete, not a separate tool or step.
Review. When the client submits, the request moves to review. Your team approves or rejects per answer, with a reason on rejection, or approves everything at once when it all looks right. Pre-submit validation catches missing answers before the client submits, so fewer requests bounce back for a forgotten field.
Complete. Reminders stop automatically when a request is completed or closed. Completed files can sync to Google Drive. Returning clients can also open the client portal, signed in with email plus a verification code, and see all of their requests across your workspaces in one list.
Reminders: the feature that pays for the tool
Both HeyReq and Content Snare automate reminders, and this is the feature that actually saves firms time. HeyReq sends reminders by email at 9am in the client’s local time, with an adjustable lead time of 0 to 30 days before the due date, and reminders stop on their own when a request is completed or closed. A stalled-request reminder also nudges clients who have gone quiet.
The practical effect is the same as Content Snare’s reminder sequences: no more manual “just checking in” emails. The difference is configuration, not outcome. If your firm lives on reminders, either tool removes the chase.
Review: approve, reject, move on
HeyReq’s review is built for volume. Per-answer approve and reject handles the case where one document is wrong, for example a blurry scan. Approve-all handles the case where everything is right and you do not want to click through twenty items one by one. Pre-submit validation handles the case where the client forgot a required answer entirely.
Content Snare’s review is more developed for inline commenting on individual documents. If your team writes long comments on specific uploads, that is an edge for Content Snare. If your bottleneck is clicking through clean submissions during tax season, HeyReq’s approve-all is the faster path.
Templates, bulk send, and recurring work
Both tools cover the same mechanics: reusable templates, bulk sending to many clients at once, and recurring schedules for repeatable work. HeyReq supports weekly, monthly, and quarterly recurrences, bulk send from a template copy, and CSV import for both clients and template questions, so an existing spreadsheet of clients or a question list becomes a working template quickly.
Content Snare’s advantage here is library depth: accounting-specific templates built for tax and compliance workflows, including Making Tax Digital. If your work is standard accounting checklists, that library saves setup time. If you build your own templates anyway, the difference shrinks to nothing.
Client portal and access
New requests need no login. Returning clients get something better than another emailed link: a portal at /portal where email plus a verification code shows every request across workspaces, with status, due dates, and progress. Client links on Pro can also use a heyreq.com subdomain instead of the default link.
Content Snare also offers a client portal. The practical difference is small. One note on branding: Content Snare offers full white-label on your firm’s own domain; HeyReq on Pro offers a heyreq.com subdomain. If every client touchpoint must carry your own domain, Content Snare has the edge.
Automation: Drive sync, webhooks, API, and Zapier
This is where the two products have moved since our last comparison, so it is worth updating the record.
HeyReq syncs completed requests to Google Drive, offers webhooks on Pro for published and completed events, and offers a REST API on Pro for listing requests, reading a request and its answers, and creating draft requests, with idempotency keys for safe retries. The API is documented publicly at heyreq.com/docs/api-reference.
On Zapier, the honest status is: HeyReq’s native Zapier integration passed review on November 1, 2026, and is now being prepared for Beta listing; it is not yet searchable in Zapier’s directory. Until it is listed, a firm that needs a live Zapier app today should pick Content Snare, whose Zapier and Make integrations are live now. HeyReq’s webhooks and API cover many of the same automation needs in the meantime, but they are not a one-click Zapier app, and we will not claim otherwise.
Content Snare’s integration lead remains its clearest advantage overall: Xero Practice Manager, FYI, SuiteFiles, Dropbox, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Google Drive, plus Zapier and Make. If your firm lives inside Xero Practice Manager or FYI, that alone can decide the choice.
Signing in: Google, GitHub, or email and password
Team sign-in works with Google or GitHub, and since November 2026 also with email and password. Email accounts verify once by email link before first sign-in. This is a small thing, but it matters for teams that do not want every seat tied to a Google or GitHub account.

Where Content Snare still wins
Saying it plainly, because it is true:
- Integrations. Xero Practice Manager, FYI, SuiteFiles, and a live Zapier app. HeyReq’s Zapier app has passed review but is not live yet — Beta listing is still being prepared.
- Branding. Full white-label on your own domain, versus a heyreq.com subdomain.
- Maturity and compliance. ISO 27001 certification, 1,900+ firms, and a longer operating history, including being named UK Practice App of the Year at the 2025 Xero App Awards. Firms with strict vendor requirements should weigh that.
- Template library depth. Accounting-specific templates for tax and compliance workflows.
- Inline commenting. More developed for detailed feedback on individual documents.
None of these are small. If any one of them is a hard requirement for your firm, pick Content Snare and do not look back.
Pricing: flat vs scaling
HeyReq’s pricing is simple: free up to 5 active requests, then Pro at $29 per month or $290 per year, tax included, per workspace rather than per seat. The price does not grow when you add team members or active requests.
Content Snare’s pricing is plan-based and scales with active requests and team size, starting around $29 per month. For a firm with a small, steady request volume, the two are close. For a firm whose busy season spikes request volume, or that keeps adding staff, HeyReq’s flat price stays flat while Content Snare’s tier moves up. Content Snare offers a free trial but no permanent free plan; HeyReq’s free tier lets a firm run real requests before paying anything.
Who should pick which
Pick Content Snare if: you need Xero Practice Manager, FYI, or SuiteFiles integrations; you need a live Zapier app today; you need AML and identity screening built in; you need full white-label on your own domain; or your firm’s vendor policy requires ISO 27001 certification and a long operating history.
Pick HeyReq if: you are a small team or solo firm; you want a permanent free plan to start; you want e-signatures included in the same checklist; you want flat pricing that does not scale with seats or request volume; you serve Chinese-speaking clients as well as English-speaking ones; or you want a public API and webhooks for your own automation.
Either works if: you mainly need the core job done, a no-login checklist, automatic reminders, and per-item review. In that case, try both free options and pick the one your clients complete faster.
Frequently asked questions
Do clients need an account?
No, on either tool. Both open from a link with no login. HeyReq also offers an optional client portal for returning clients, signed in with email plus a verification code.
Do both support e-signatures?
HeyReq includes e-signature fields in requests. Content Snare has been reported as working on digital signing, but it is not its core shipped feature, so check its current status if signing matters to you.
Is there a free plan?
HeyReq has a permanent free plan for up to 5 active requests. Content Snare offers a free trial but no permanent free plan.
Is there a Zapier app?
Content Snare’s Zapier app is live. HeyReq’s Zapier integration passed review on November 1, 2026, and is being prepared for Beta listing; it is not yet searchable in Zapier’s directory. HeyReq’s webhooks and REST API are available on Pro in the meantime.
Can I automate recurring work?
Yes, both support bulk sending and recurring requests for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end cycles.
What happens when a request is complete?
On HeyReq, reminders stop automatically and files can sync to Google Drive. On Content Snare, completed files can be exported as a zip or synced to connected storage.
Bottom line
Content Snare earned its position. It is the safer choice for larger firms with deep integration needs and strict vendor requirements. HeyReq is the leaner choice: free to start, flat pricing, e-signatures included, no per-seat cost, and a public API for teams that automate. The core experience, a client opening a link and finishing a checklist, is the same either way, so the decision comes down to integrations, branding, and price shape, not the checklist itself.
Try HeyReq free at heyreq.com. No credit card, up to 5 requests, and your first client link is ready in minutes.
