Designing the First Five Minutes
Guide a new user to their first small win as fast as humanly possible.
The first five minutes of someone's experience with your product decide whether they come back. If you can guide a new user to their first small win quickly, everything else gets easier.
Find the "aha" moment
Every product has a moment where the value becomes obvious. For a notes app it is saving your first note. For an analytics tool it is seeing your first chart. Your onboarding should do nothing but get the user to that moment as fast as possible.
Cut the tutorial. Cut the optional settings. Cut the account fields you don't need yet. Defer everything until after the user has felt the value.
- Map the shortest path to the first win.
- Remove every step that isn't on that path.
- Celebrate the win with a tiny bit of feedback.
If a brand-new user can't reach the core value in five minutes, they probably won't reach it at all.
